Is it possible to Transfer iPad Apps to Mac Book? How to do the same?

I have an iPad 2 and want to do a software update to OS 5.1. I am aware that I will probably lose all my apps if I do such a thing, so I want to transfer them all over to my MacBook. Being an Apple noob, I have no idea how to do such a thing. I really don't want to lose all my paid apps, and if possible I really don't want to have to download everything again from the internet.

ofcourse, you can have your applications backup to any external storage devices., like USB's and to your Mac Book. And you can update your iPad 2 with OS 5.1.

you can do that in easy steps represented here
first of all you have to connect your ipad to any pc .
and then itunes will be opened on your pc.
if it automatically does not opened then you have to open it manually.
and after that you have to creat an folder on your pc.
now sync all the data from ipad to pc into the folder.
and similarly you have to connect your mac book to the same pc.
